Close up w/
Rikas
When was the last time you really danced? If you can’t remember, it’s probably time to do it now—with Rikas as your soundtrack. The four-piece band, whose second album ‘Soundtrack For A Movie That Has Not Been Written Yet’ is out now, creates music that sweeps you away like a warm breeze, leaving everything lighter. We spent a day with all four members of Rikas in their hometown of Stuttgart (yes, we’ve got some local tips for you, too), where their journey began. Later, Sascha and Sam sat down with us to talk about their journey as musicians, growing up, and the challenge of staying true to themselves.
Music is a safe place for us. It can be our refuge or a place of facing our feelings and reality.
The
interview
Let’s start at the beginning, what brought you together as a band, and when did you realise this was more than just a hobby?
Sascha: The beauty of this band lies in its origins. Our connection is rooted in friendship, born from a shared love of art, especially music. Sam and Ferdinand met in kindergarten, both inspired by their artist parents. They began learning instruments early – Ferdinand on drums, Sam on guitar. Chris and Sam bonded in high school over the guitar, pushing each other to learn new moves. Naturally, they formed a band – three 13-year-olds at a cultural peak for bands. It was cool to be in a band. I had another project then, but after some jam sessions with Sam, he asked me to join forces. We had fun, but deep down, we knew it could become something bigger. After high school, we committed. We booked Interrail tickets to play beyond our hometown, busked across Europe, and supported emerging bands. Touring the world sparked our dreams of being professional musicians, and by 2017, when we played our first festival season, we called it our work.
How did growing up together and knowing each other’s different phases shape the band’s dynamic and sound today?
The journey we’ve been on together feels like brotherhood. It makes the creative process—and performing on stage—intuitive and easy. We grew up together, became men together, and most importantly, we learned from and with each other. Because of that, we’re sensitive and caring with one another and everyone we work with along the way. We believe you can feel that when you see us perform. There are certain values we don’t have to discuss.
Since you’ve been playing music from a young age, it must be a big part of your personalities. What would you be without it?
Sascha: Music is a safe place for us. It can be our refuge or a space to face our feelings and reality. After years together, we realised that no matter what topic we sing about, we always tend to write longing, happy music. But even though music is a big part of our work, we also bring other talents and skills into this project. Chris, for example, handles all our graphics, album and merchandise designs, and runs the shop. Ferdinand is our craftsman and accountant. Sam is our visionary and takes care of almost all marketing and networking. I guess without music, we’d have careers in these fields—Chris as a graphic designer/illustrator, Ferdinand as an artisan, and Sam as a creative director. And I’d say I’d be a dancer… but that doesn’t count because music would still be involved.
Each of us has our own superpowers, and we complement each other well.
