When, how and why did you start making music?

I started making music when I was 13 years old. I started making music because my parents were into music and were musicians and I always had a huge passion for the music that they would show me. Artists would range from Stevie Wonder, Fiji, D’Angelo and Ohio Players to Earth, Wind and Fire.

Who inspired you in the early days of being a musician? Who inspires you today?

My friends who made beats inspired me. I am also inspired by new music that I discover daily – for example, Solange, Men I Trust or Blood Orange.

What were the biggest changes for you from your first album to your most recent one?

I think the biggest change was that I am not in college anymore. I also picked up bass and guitar and a little bit of piano, which has immensely helped my creative output.

How would you describe your new album in one sentence?

My album is like an ethereal art installation spanning cross genres from the African diaspora.

In a couple of years from now, what music will remind you of the current time period?

I think trap music and bedroom pop will remind me of this current time period. The amount of trap and bedroom pop music that came out in the last five to eight years is overwhelming.

What music do you listen to to boost your mood?

I love to listen to Larry June, Jamiroquai or anything Neptunes related. It is great motivational, mood-stabilizing music.

What music do you listen to when you want to relax?

I tend to listen to jazz music like Chet Baker, Grant Green or soundscapish kind of music that is just movement and sounds. These types of genres and artists help me find peace when I am in a creative rut or when I just want to find time to relax.

What music reminds you of your childhood?

Kanye West and Outkast remind me of my childhood. They played a huge role in my early musical discoveries. They were musical heroes of mine.

What do you enjoy most about living in California?

I enjoy the consistency of great weather. I also really love the amount of great places to eat and places to hike, especially in Northern California.

Your favourite places in Oakland or the Bay Area?

My favourite restaurant in California is probably Aburaya in downtown Oakland. My favourite park is Joaquin Miller in the Oakland hills.

How would you describe your personal style?

I think my personal style stems from 60s and 70s street fashion and gritty New York street-wear from the 90s. I also get a lot of fashion inspiration from elderly Asian people. They have a really good sense of style!

The five items in your closet that you keep coming back to?

Five items in my closet I always have in rotation is my brown Converse Chucks, my Birkenstocks, my turquoise ring, my linen bucket hat, and my Carhartt workwear pants.

What is currently on top of your to-do list?

I want to finish my album, go to Mexico on vacation and travel the world. After that, I want to design the next season of my clothing brand, free the doggos, and then shoot a short film.

Your personal goals or dreams for the future?

One day I would like to open a youth centre for underprivileged kids in Oakland. My other dreams and aspirations include scoring and filming a movie and opening a restaurant.

What would you like to learn, how would you like to grow or develop?

I would like to learn how to edit and shoot films and learn how to sew clothes. I also want to learn how to read music.
