Close up w/

Martin Otto
Wörner

Growing up among barrels, vines and tractors, Martin Otto Wörner was practically destined for the vineyard – yet he’s anything but conventional. The Rheinhessen winemaker has built his reputation on doing things differently: mastering his craft, trusting his soil, and giving industrial winemaking “the middle finger”. His wines are pure, his mindset bold, and his energy contagious.

The

interview

You’re the third generation in your family to dedicate yourself to winemaking. How did your childhood shape you? Was it always clear that you’d follow this path?

Looking back, my childhood was very formative. It was normal to be constantly surrounded by wine, to drive tractors, and to enjoy all sorts of freedoms that I only later realised were anything but ordinary.

How do your wines differ from those of your mother and grandparents?

With my grandparents’ generation came the industrialisation of the wine industry – something that’s still ongoing today. For my parents’ generation, the focus was still mainly on productivity rather than creating something individual. I could easily write a whole book about the changes in winemaking over just the last two generations. As a small winery, I saw an opportunity to give the industry the middle finger and stand for exactly the opposite. I see my wines as a contemporary interpretation of Rheinhessen. They’re made from grapes only – nothing else added.

What values and lessons from your family still guide you today?

Work hard, play hard.
